AFL 9s ‘LUNCHTIME ON LANGLEY’ IS ABOUT TO START

East Perth Football District is starting an AFL 9s recreational footy competition – ‘Lunchtime on Langley’ – which will run on Tuesdays at Langley Park.

Workplaces are invited to enter a team of 10 into the inaugural competition, which will run for 8 weeks, from March 20 until May 8, 2012. The competition is a social/competitive one, non-contact, and with mixed teams having a minimum of 4 females in every team of 10 players. We believe that it is a healthy and fun lunchtime activity in which a lot of city workers will want to be involved.

The initial season will be limited to 8 teams only, in order to give a quality experience to all players. It is anticipated that AFL 9s ‘Lunchtimes on Langley’ will be very popular and will eventually be offered on most lunchtimes. We intend to run one competition each school term or similar (4 for the year) and believe that AFL 9s will be a ‘must-do’ for workers in the city and surrounds. If you have any friends who you know would be interested in the concept, please feel free to advise them that the competition is now open for team registrations.

East Perth Football Club Require Host Families

The East Perth Football Clubs regional zone is made up of towns within the Lower South West Football league and southern end of the South West Football league. Every year there is an increasing amount of young players making the transition to Perth to further their football careers.

This transition is massive steps for some players aged 17 to 19 who have only lived in the country and are not familiar with city life. On top of this they also have to deal with issues of work/study, training and the costs with living away from home. To help with this transition and reduce the difficulties associated with the move the club is calling on any members or supporters of the club who may be interested in becoming a host family for these young players.

The arrangement would be of a temporary situation with the players paying board with timelines ranging from 6 to 12 months depending on the capabilities of the host family and the needs of the player, for further information or to register your interest you can call Garry Moss on 9443 2259.

Dipper Drops In!

A couple of East Perth District schools were the lucky recipients of a special visit this week as AFL legend and 2011 NAB Auskick Ambassador Robert ‘Dipper’ DiPierdomenico dropped in to kick off the new footy season. Despite the heat, Dipper had plenty of energy to entertain and teach the kids about the fun and enjoyment AFL footy has to offer./p>

As part of a whirlwind trip to WA, Dipper visited both St Peters Catholic School in Bedford and Camboon Primary School in Noranda where he helped deliver some fun footy clinics in conjunction with the East Perth District development staff. Both schools are looking to get heavily involved in footy for the 2011 season, as well as running Afterschool Auskick programs for their students during the year.

At Camboon Primary School, Noranda Junior Football Club were also on hand to assist with the footy activities as well as provide the students and parents with some information on their community Auskick centre running down at Lightning Park this year. All the kids involved in both clinics had a great afternoon and special thanks must go to the staff at both schools for helping to organise such great events.

The NAB AFL Auskick program has been designed for children aged five to eight years. It ensures that all children develop the fundamental skills required to participate in Australian Football. Children participate in activities designed to improve the various skills of the game, followed by a modified game in an environment which safely allows children to practice their Australian Football skills. All-Girls Primary Interclub Competition Coordinator:

A new football competition, for Years 5, 6 and 7 girls only, is being offered over a 6 week period.

Games will be on Sundays, 9.00-10.30am, on March 25, April 1, 15, 22, 29, May 6.

The competition will be based at the Morley JFC, R.A.Cook Reserve, Coode Street, Morley. It will be run as AFL 9s recreational footy.

The coordinator of this competition is responsible for the advertising, promotion and running of this new competition. They will work closely with the East Perth District Development Officer to ensure that this program is successful in its first year and offers a football playing pathway for youth girls.

An honorarium payment of $800 is offered to the successful person.

All-Girls Secondary Interclub Competition Coordinator:

A new football competition, for Years 8, 9 and 10 girls only, is being offered over a 6 week period.

An honorarium payment of $1400 is offered to the successful applicant.

Junior Competition Administrator

Expressions of Interest – Junior Competition Administrator

The East Perth District Football Development Council is seeking expressions of interest to take on the role of Junior Competition Administrator for the 2011 season. Working with the East Perth District Development Staff and the Junior Competition Committee Executive this role will be on a casual basis (the equivalent of approximately 2 days per week) beginning in April 2011 and ending in October 2011.

Basic structure of the role will allow the employee to be flexible in working from home but must have both an active internet and phone line. Both of which costs can be reimbursed by the East Perth District Development Council.

Throughout the Junior Competition season, the JCC Administrator will act as the key point of contact for all competition related issues and will be required to be available to field calls, queries and complaints from the weekend’s matches and administer appropriate responses at the request of the JCC executive. The JCC administrator will be required to attend Junior Competition Council meetings throughout the year as well as contributing to the organisation and administration of junior competition functions in 2011.

Selection criteria includes:

Demonstrated experience in local sport administration
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Sound writing skills
Demonstrated experience in managing conflict

The successful applicant will also be required to obtain an ABN and will be paid competitive casual reward rates.

District Family Day

The East Perth District Family Day was held on the 7^th August and was a great success. All of our nine district junior football clubs were represented on the day with plenty of entertainment provided in the form of an animal farm, bouncy castle and face painting. This of course was all secondary to the main event which saw the Royals get up over their bitter rivals West Perth and storm into finals contention.Players of all ages from our district clubs provided a sea of colour at Medibank stadium where they first provided a guard of honour for our league side before making their way over to the additional entertainment mentioned above where our past players supplied yet another excellent sausage sizzle.

Half time saw a huge cross section of our districts finest participate in Little League and Auskick grid games with many others taking advantage of the sunshine and having a kick on home ground of their WAFL heroes. Many thanks must go to all of our district community clubs for supporting this day and hopefully we can replicate its success in 2011.

Coolbinia Bombers Junior Football Club 17s player Daniel McSweeney notched up his 200th game for the club on Sunday August 1st. Daniel is the club game record holder and this amazing accomplishment is thanks to an early start with Modifieds, and many weekends where he would play in his own age group, followed by the age group above. Parents Rachel and Kevin have obviously been great support! Daniel has evolved from someone who loved to take saving marks on the last line of defence, to an agile, strong marking impact player all around the ground. He now plays mostly forward, where his team-oriented approach sets up numerous scoring opportunities. Popular amongst team-mates and coaches alike, and always willing to give a helping hand, Daniel epitomizes what club footy is all about. Congratulations Macca!

East Perth welcomed the Morley Bulldogs 12s into their home recently as the junior football side were invited to Medibank Stadium to participate in a tour and training session. As the district endeavours to make the East Perth Football Club more accessible to our district clubs, Morley Junior Football Club were invited to send down a team to train on the WAFL ground before making their way into the stands to watch the senior squad train and prepare for the weekends fixture. The young Bulldogs were also given a thorough tour of the clubrooms and facilities where hopefully they will find themselves in years to come. To top it off an excellent dinner was provided by the East Perth Past Players group to the grateful boys as they watched the league train.

Lauren leads the way for ladies

The birth of East Perth’s Youth Girls team and the success of the State Schoolgirls Championships have lifted the profile of local female footballers like East Perth’s Lauren Osborne.
While juggling the pressures of her Year 11 studies at John Forrest Senior High School with her busy training schedule, Osborne’s football resumé showcases enough talent to impress even the most senior footballers.
At just 16, she was the youngest member of WA’s senior state team competing at the National Championships, and was also selected to captain WA’s State Schoolgirls team at the Championships in Victoria last month.
“To be able to captain WA is such an honour, then to be part of the first ever female football team to beat Victoria, and then go on and win the Championship was an amazing experience, one I will never forget,” Osborne said
She has been playing football for 11 years, currently sitting on 128 games after starting her career in the Auskick competition.
After many years playing for the Morley Bulldogs, she moved to East Perth Football Club to play for the junior league.
Osborne said EPFC was at the forefront of progress for local women’s football.
“I think East Perth is a welcoming club for girls, and it’s only getting better,” she said.
“They welcomed me and looked after me. Now they've got a youth girl’s team and all girls Auskick centre.
“This is good for girls interested in playing footy, but don't want to play with the boys.”
Osborne said she did not believe football was a ‘boys’ sport’.
“It’s not just a boys’ sport, girls can play it just as well, sometimes better,” she said.
“Come down and watch one of our games. The people that do come down are usually surprised at how well girls can play.”
East Perth development manager Stephanie Walding and fellow state teammate said Osborne’s experience playing football with boys was one of her greatest strengths.
“I think having played alongside and against boys up until the last couple of years taught Lauren to go after the ball no matter what,” she said.
“She has great skills and knowledge of the game, but what sets her apart is her determination to get the ball when it’s there.”
With her talent and passion and further competitions on the horizon, it seems Lauren Osborne’s list of football achievements is set to grow.

Footy Fever For Female Fanatics

East Perth Football Club has realised a long-standing dream with the development of a district women’s team.
After many years as the only district without a female side, East Perth’s Youth Girls’ team is paving the way to a competitive 2010 season in the WAWFL.
The Youth Girls team is undergoing an intensive six-week training program coached by East Perth development manager Stephanie Walding.
“The program will give the girls a taste of what it’s like to play football and be involved in a team away from school,” she said.
“There’s a real emphasis on developing the girls’ skills as well as their football knowledge, and then more specifically helping them when they go out and play competitive football.”
The team will act as a development squad, feeding into a proposed East Perth WAWFL side for the 2010 season, just as male development squads provide players for WAFL Colts teams.
East Perth’s Youth Girls team member Dinah Wambui said the team had learned a lot in just a few training sessions.
“As a team we've been running really hard, perfecting our kicking and handballing,” she said.
“It's been a great experience learning from three fantastic coaches, giving us their time and expertise and organising things for us.
“We are all so grateful for their efforts.”
Before the start of the next WAWFL season, the district will have to find a host club, support staff and in particular, more players.
Currently the team consists of approximately 20 players, with the district hoping reach at least 25 in the coming weeks.
“Getting a team back in the WAWFL has been on the Districts agenda for some time now, and with female football being the largest growth area in football across the nation now is a perfect time to put the plans in place,” Walding said.
“Hopefully the Women’s National Championships that were held here in Perth last month helped raise the profile of female football and we have girls across all of Perth wanting to play.”

Youth Girls Carnival

Coolbinia Reserve was again packed with footballers last Saturday 14^th August but things looked a little different from the usual. This time girls from all across the state pulled on the boots to take part in the annual WAFL Youth Girls Carnival. In what has been an excellent opportunity in providing a football pathway to females in the community, girls from all across the East Perth Metropolitan District came together to represent the Royals against the nine other WAFL clubs. Also participating were teams from the country with the Great Southern and South West regions both represented on the day.

The East Perth District Junior Competition has reached the business end of the season with finals commencing on Sunday 28^th August. The top teams in the 13s to 17s age groups will battle it out over the next four weeks for premiership honours.

Elimination and Qualifying finals will be held at Coolbinia Reserve on Sunday 28^th August. The action starts with the 13’s age group at 9am.

Morley Bulldogs JFC will host the semi-finals at RA Cook Reserve on Sunday 4^th September, while the action then heads north to Coolamon Oval in Ellenbrook for the Preliminary finals on Sunday 11^th September.

The culmination of the junior season will take place on Sunday 18^th September with Grand Finals being played at Lightning Park in Noranda.

All EPFC members are encouraged to come down and watch the next generation of Royals players in action for their club teams. The East Perth District congratulates all players and coaches who took part in the 2011 season and wishes the best of luck to all teams participating in junior finals.

July Coaching Clinic Bigger Than Ever

Beatty Park exploded with life early on the 5^th of July as the East Perth District July Holiday Clinic geared up for another year. The sun was out and shining as more than 160 children between the ages of 5 & 12 turned out to show their skills and have some fun.

East Perth Football Club players assisted with the day taking groups for games and sharing their skills and experience with the lucky participants; many of whom we predict to see in a royals jumper in the very near future.

Plenty of fresh fruit and muffins were available throughout the day to give the kids a healthy snack and keep up their energy levels up between the drills and skills.

The West Coast Eagles also made a visit with 5 players attending from the club. Adam Selwood, Ben McKinley, Luke Shuey, Jarrad Oakley-Nichols and Koby Stevens arrived at the clinic and were a huge hit as they answered questions, sign some autographs and show the skills that got them to the highest level.

East Perth District Development Officer Brendan McFaull said the day was a great success and would only get bigger in the future. As part of the clinic kids had the opportunity to purchase a replica royals jumper and it was fantastic to see so many running around on the day.

TRINITY COLLEGE INTO YEAR 8/9 FOOTBALL CUP FINAL

Trinity College are shooting for their fifth straight title after winning their way into the Grand Final of the Year 8/9 Football Cup on August 25^th.

Playing in the Semi-Final at Claremont Oval, against Wanneroo SHS, Trinity, representing the East Perth District, went to half-time with a 15 point lead, after a hard-fought first half saw them kick two goals in the last minute before half-time – the dreaded “red-time” score.

The strong Wanneroo team showed the benefits of a sound specialist football program at their school and played great team football, creating many movements forward from half-back rebounding, before the Trinity boys used good run from behind the play to continually force the ball forward, eventually running out winners by 43 points, 8-10-58 to 2-3-15.

Best in an even contribution from Trinity were ruckman Brayden Keizer, hard-working centre-half-forward Jayden Gerrand and livewire midfielder Sheldon Dias.

Nine of Trinity’s team are currently in East Perth’s 2011 Development program.

DOCKERS SINK HAWKS IN EPIC 13’s ELIMINATION FINAL

Ellenbrook squeaked past a courageous Noranda, winning by three points in a pulsating 13’s elimination final at Coolbinia Oval on Sunday August 28th.

The match was an epic battle of desperation on so many levels. Acts of bravery, passion and skill were limitless in the Dockers 5.7 (37) to 5.4 (34) victory.

Played primarily between both fifty metre arcs, both sides struggled to gain momentum. There were many tight stoppages, adding to the tension off the field. Ellenbrook’s courage to run and spread in numbers ultimately saw them win the game, however Noranda’s endeavour was sensational; the efforts of Christian Ameduri will live long in the memory of all who watched the match.

Ellenbrook were superbly led by Blake Jankowski and James Trachey all day, which would have pleased the Ellenbrook coaching staff. The Dockers, buoyed by the victory, will fight on in September and appear to be a real wildcard.

“I am very proud, we played with a tremendous amount of belief and played for each other. Playing so well for each other was so pleasing to see”, said a relieved Neville Williams, Dockers Coach, after the game.

Noranda cast a forlorn picture as the final siren blew, with their season over. However, their efforts in the 13’s competition this season were truly phenomenal. Combined, the Hawks two 13’s squads won 31 out of a possible 36 games, truly an outstanding achievement.

CARDIES CANTER IN 13’s QUALIFYING FINAL

Mt Hawthorn strolled to a comprehensive 22 point victory against Ballajura, in a spirited and high-quality 13’s qualifying final at Coolbinia Oval on Sunday August 28th.

The Cardies ran rampant through the centre corridor all day and their tall forward line reaped the benefits in the 5.3 (33) to 1.5 (11) victory over the Royals. Forwards Ciaran Foster and Jack Perry were prominent, with their long kicking tormenting the Ballajura defence.

Ballajura resorted to a possession style game in order to stem the flow; however the backward and sideways tendencies resulted in turnovers and leg-weary midfielders, who appeared physically spent at fulltime. Quality midfielder Sheldon Dias was the exception, producing a lionhearted four-quarter effort and amassing close to 35 possessions.

The Cardies hierarchy would have been impressed with Sam Powell-Pepper. His forward presence was significant and will be a key contributor in his team’s push for the pennant.

“Our defence was excellent, our pre rehearsed kick-ins were executed perfectly and everybody put in a great team effort” said Steve Burke, coach of the victorious Cardies.

Ballajura will learn a lot from this match and will need to be at their best for the remaining finals. The Cardinals were in great condition and may well just have leapt into favouritism for the flag.

Mt Lawley Hawks Women’s Team kick goals in the WAWFL

The Mt Lawley Amateur Football Club Women’s Team has qualified for the WA Women’s Football League (WAWFL) Division 2 Grand Final in their inaugural year.

This year the club entered their first women’s team in the WAWFL competition representing the East Perth Football District, with the team growing from 6 girls at their first week of pre-season training in February, to a full squad and looking to expand into Division 1 in the 2012 season.

Team Manager and Committee member Nicola Jordan couldn’t be happier with the team’s first year. “The Mt Lawley Women’s Team has gone from strength to strength in 2011. The commitment from the club and the girls has taken us to a grand final in our inaugural year, which is an extremely good sign for the years to come’.

Mt Lawley Women’s Team coach Carolyn Hills said the 2011 playing group has exceeded all expectations, transforming from a young bunch of girls into a proud well skilled team of football players.

‘To assist with the transformation, specialist coaching was provided to the girls by the football legend himself, Barry Cable. This experience was invaluable and the girls will wear the Mt Lawley colours proudly as they run out on to the field on Sunday’.

The WAWFL is in its 34^th year, and 2011 saw every WAFL district represented. With over 77,000 women playing Australian Rules across the country, the WAWFL will continue to expand and now is the time to get involved. The Grand Final is being played Sunday 4^th September at Brownes Stadium at 10am.

Mt Lawley Women’s Team will commence pre-season training in early 2012. The team trains at their home ground, Hamer Park Mt Lawley, on Wednesday and Friday Evening from 5.45pm-7pm. Gribble Named WAAFL’s Best

Mt Lawley Hawks midfielder Clinton Gribble has won the CJ Jamieson Medal for the Fairest and Best player in the WAAFL A Grade competition for 2011.

Gribble, who played 6 league matches for Swan Districts during 2005-07, was a surprise winner. Sidelined by injury early in the season, Gribble played his first game for the Hawks in round 9 and polled 8 votes in his last 4 games to win the medal by two votes.

Mt Lawley President Garry Formica, was full of praise for Gribble. “Clinton has been a great addition to the club this year. His win took us a bit by surprise but he is a hard-worker and a good clubman.”

Gribble became just the 4^th player from Mt Lawley to win the medal and the first in 18 years since Justin Cook’s success in 1993.

Other senior players in the East Perth District also had individual success in the 2011 WAAFL competition. Jacob Howard from Noranda ECU took out the fairest and best player award in the C4 Reserves competition and Jordan Barber from the Ellenbrook Eels received the top honour in the West Coast Eagles Colts division.

Barber, who also plays in Ellenbrook’s C4 grade team, is an outstanding prospect according to Ellenbrook President, Adrian Hughes. “He can play either as a mobile ruckman or as an attacking half-back. He is definitely in our best 22 and will play in the C4 grade grand final on Saturday.”

Trinity College’s Year 8 & 9 football team has climbed the mountain once again, making it five in a row in the state-wide Year 8 & 9 schools football competition. Three goals in the first quarter set the tone before the teamwas forced to grind out their 36 point win over regular rivals, CBC Fremantle, on Saturday September 3 at Paterson’s Stadium.

A goal

to one of the best on ground for the night – Jackson Flematti – started the scoring, before Nixon Hamlet put the afterburners on and kicked a second. Brayden Keizer slipped forward to kick a third, while Sheldon Dias was tigerish across half-forward and Michael Bell strong at centre-half-back. Giuliano Martino was important after coming on mid-way through the quarter, and the defence of Ryan O’Connell, Daniel Maher and Richard Giorgi was effective.

The second quarter was even, with Morgan Hindle effective on the wing after Oliver Morgan-Hobbs went down with injury, and Louis Everall impressive. A crushing tackle from Callan Starr shifted the momentum Trinity’s way by the end of the quarter, and two goals from centre-half-forward Frank James rewarded persistence in the middle of the ground. Hamlet was again damaging and Michael Braut was combining well with Callum Radecki in the centre.

Trinity’s

radar was a problem in the third term, kicking 1.5, but their defence was resolute, keeping CBC scoreless. Flematti was the stand-out for the term, while Harrison Moore capped off a strong quarter with a goal. Morgan-Hobbs made his presence felt when he returned to the ground.

The last qu

arter saw a goal for Braut, and a third for James, with plenty of opportunities for the bench players to work their way into the match. Matthew Houwen and Carey Hortle were not beaten in one-on-ones, while Nic Marciano was bustling his way through the packs. Nic Moulton showed plenty of poise, as did James Valentine, while Josh Gherardi enjoyed his run. Fittingly, a pack-bursting run from Radecki and a huge hit from Starr finished off the game.

MORLEY BULLDOGS SHOW THEIR CLASS

The Morley Bulldogs 15’s showed why they are clear flag favourites by destroying a brave Ballajura team in the second semi-final of the East Perth District 15’s competition on Sunday September 4.

Playing at their home ground, the Morley boys showed why they have been the dominant team of the past three seasons. A stunning first quarter barrage of goals left the Ballajura team shell-shocked and they never recovered, though they were brave throughout and never stopped trying.

The Morley team is sprinkled with big bodied key players who are athletic and highly-skilled. Players such as on-baller Tyler Sceresini, Josh DeLuca Cardillo and Calvin Borowski all display clean, sure hands, excellent kicking skills and are fast movers – all ingredients to being a good senior footballer. Complementing these three are the smaller players like Shayne Hille, who has a big dose of the football smarts and whose sublime foot skills make life much easier for the Bulldog forwards.

Throw on-baller Lance Mongoo into the mix and Morley become even more formidable. Mongoo missed Sunday’s game, as he was interstate with the WA Indigenous Schoolboys team.

The Bulldogs will take a power of beating for the flag. They simply ooze class and are brilliantly coached by wily old fox Warren Marshall.

HAWKS ECLIPSE CARDIES IN 13’s 2ND SEMI FINAL

Noranda stormed into the East Perth District 13’s grand final, overwhelming Mt Hawthorn by 24 points at R.A Cook Reserve, Morley, on Sunday September 4.

The Noranda Hawks were ferocious in their attack on the football all game, and swarmed each contest in large numbers. The forwards got excellent delivery from the midfielders, and capitalised effectively in the 8.7 (55) to 5.1 (31) victory.

The Cardies started brightly, with their use of the centre corridor providing a solid avenue to goal. Forward Brandon Duke was a constant headache for the Noranda defence, with his high marking invaluable in the wet conditions.

Despite the second term having more gridlocked clearances then a freeway mergepoint in peak hour, it was the Hawks midfield which turned the course of the match. Ruckman Harry Blanch dominated the hit outs and gave excellent service to his midfielders.

In the second half, Noranda adapted better to the driving rain. The Cardies defence were under siege and the constant pressure lead to a level on unaccountability. Noranda pair Mitch Cavanaugh and Alex Di Placido revelled in the second half, with their opponents regularly giving chase.

“We just preached self-belief, the boys were confident, used the corridor effectively and played terrific footy” an ecstatic Noranda coach Shaun Blanch said.

The Cardies endeavour was excellent and they wouldn’t be disheartened by the performance. Sam Powell-Pepper continued his dominance in the forward line and provided inspiration to all around him.

Noranda has next weekend off, while Mt Hawthorn will play Ellenbrook in the Preliminary Final next Sunday at Hamer Park, Mount Lawley.

ELLENBROOK’S ROYAL FLUSH IN 13’S 1ST SEMI FINAL

Ellenbrook’s 13’s finals crusade continued on Sunday September 4, with a remarkable three point victory over Ballajura at R.A Cook Reserve, Morley.

For a half of football, the Dockers’s season looked over. But at halftime, two things happened. The first was a unique display of belief and unity greeting the tired players; the other was a torrent of driving rain. It can be deduced that both of these outcomes provided the spark in the 6.2 (38) to 5.5 (35) win.

Ballajura were excellent throughout the match; however, they lacked effective scoreboard pressure. A seemingly invincible 15 point half time lead proved to be not enough, surprisingly, given the heavy conditions. Sheldon Dias was instrumental once again, involving all of his teammates in the action.

In the dying minutes of the match, it was Ellenbrook who kept their head. The Dockers ‘call to arms’ saw every contest being fought, every player exerting pressure. Dockers defender James Trachy’s courageous mark effectively sealed the memorable win.

“Injuries were high all week, but we just encouraged the boys to believe. And if you buy enough tickets of belief, you can ride the train of success” a delighted Dockers coach Neville Williams said.

Ballajura were left heartbroken at the final siren, yet they can be proud of the emergence of a number of exciting prospects. Players such as Sheldon Dias, John Gregory and Trent D’Silva were consummate professionals throughout the entire season, and truly were a pleasure to watch.

Ellenbrook will play Mt Hawthorn next Sunday in the preliminary final, with the winner to take on Noranda for the premiership

Venue Change for Junior Preliminary Finals

The East Perth District Junior Preliminary finals will be held this Sunday 11^th September. The venue for these matches has been changed to Hamer Park in Mt Lawley after the original venue, Coolamon Reserve in Ellenbrook, was deemed unsuitable by the JCC due to the poor condition of the ground.

Fixtures for the Preliminary Finals are as follows:

The Mt Lawley Amateur Football Club Women’s Team finished the 2011 season with a courageous Grand Final performance against strong favourites SNESA Angels.

The Mt Lawley Amateur Football Club Women’s Team did the East Perth Football District proud by qualifying for last weekend’s WA Women’s Football League (WAWFL) Division 2 Grand Final. After a gutsy first and second quarter, Mt Lawley was within a kick at half time setting up a stellar last half of the most important game of the year. Unfortunately SNESA Angels pulled away in the final quarter, finishing with an 8 goal win that wasn’t a true reflection of the hard fought game.

“I am extremely proud of what the girls have achieved this year, and to make the grand final in their first year is a result of their hard work, enthusiasm and team spirit”, Hawks coach Carolyn Hills said after the game. “The girls certainly gave the game everything in the grand final and although we didn’t come away with the flag, season 2012 can’t come round quick enough”, Hills said.

The WAWFL is in its 24^th year, and 2011 saw every WAFL district represented. With over 77,000 women playing Australian Rules across the country, the WAWFL will continue to expand and now is the time to get involved.

MONGOO STARS IN INDIGENOUS SCHOOLBOYS TEAM

Morley Bulldogs 15’s player, Lance Mongoo, was one of the stars of W.A’s victory in the Indigenous State Schoolboys Team, which recently won the Australian championship title.

Mongoo played in all qualifying games and the Grand Final during the carnival. Normally a midfielder with Morley and his school team at Trinity College, coach Des Hedland had Lance playing mainly as a rebounding defender, a role he quickly adapted to, featuring in WA’s best players in the second half of the carnival.

Whilst W.A. remained undefeated throughout the carnival, Lance really enjoyed the whole experience and is very appreciative of the opportunity he and all the boys were given. Lance’s inclusion in the Indigenous Schoolboy’s Team brings the number of State Representatives from the Morley Bulldogs 15’s team in Season 2011 to three, following the inclusions of Shayne Hille and Josh Delluca in the State Schoolboys Team.

After missing last weekend’s 15’s Second Semi Final (which Morley won), Lance is ultra keen to get back with his Morley teammates and can’t wait for the Grand Final on the September 18.

CARDIES ANSWER THE CALL

Mt Hawthorn advanced into the East Perth District 13’s Grand Final with a 22 point victory over a gallant Ellenbrook at Hamer Park.

Ellenbrook have been the ‘feel good’ story of the 13’s finals, with their endeavour a refreshing reminder of how football should be played. However the Cardies answered every challenge, with greater height proving significant in the 8.7 (55) to 5.3 (33) win.

The match was played in testing conditions, which resulted in a stoppage style game. The Cardies controlled the midfield early and gave their forwards effective use. This was remarkable, as Ellenbrook dominated the hit outs all over the ground.

The performance of Cardies maestro Felix Cornes was exceptional. His ball use under pressure was outstanding and he was clearly best afield.

Despite being challenged throughout, the Cardies were superb. They all stood up when counted and will be optimistic in derailing the Noranda 13’s next Sunday.

“I’m not going to give any secrets away, but we have been rehearsing some set plays during the week. We are aware of Noranda’s tagging tendency, so hopefully we can negate this” a confident Cardies coach Steve Burke said.

Ellenbrook were served prolifically by Matthew Boddington and Blake Jankowski. They were highly influential throughout, with courageous deeds from Austin Watson notably impressive as well.

Mt Hawthorn will now play Noranda next Sunday in the 13’s Grand Final at Lightning Park, Noranda.

CARDIES DOUSE COOLBINIA’S SPARK

Mount Hawthorn cruised into the East Perth District 14’s Grand Final on with a comprehensive 35 point victory over a disappointing Coolbinia at Hamer Park on Sunday.

The Cardies started brightly and maintained a solid level of intensity throughout the match in the 12.9 (81) to 6.10 (46) triumph. Conversely, Coolbinia appeared overwhelmed and more spooked than a toddler on a ghost train.

Coolbinia achieved some respectability in the final term, outscoring the Cardies 4.5 to 3.1, yet the cause was fruitless. It was disappointing for such an electric team to run out of power on the big stage.

The Cardies were well served by Blake Preston, Liam Powell and Cal Radecki. The run and carry and ball use was excellent; a pleasing sign for the Cardies coaching staff.

The crowd also appeared in awe of Jackson Principe’s game. His fearless attack on the footy was terrific, along with his decision making under pressure.

Coolbinia’s final quarter display indicated a wealth of talent down at Bomberland. Despite being filthy with the loss, 2011 was a positive season and they will be keen to make amends in 2012.

Mt Hawthorn will face Ballajura Black in the East Perth District 14’s Grand Final at Lightning Park, Noranda this Sunday.

NORANDA SWOOP ON BALLAJURA

Noranda soared into the East Perth District 15’s Grand Final after steamrolling Ballajura Blue by 61 points at Hamer Park, Mt Lawley on Sunday.

The Hawks had winners all over the ground and led the Royals a merry dance in all departments. Costly acts of ill discipline from several Royals players did little, apart from ballooning the Noranda lead.

Foundations of the Noranda victory were based around hard running and work for each other as the ravenous Hawks won 16.10 (106) to 7.3 (45).

Ballajura coach, Glenn Sadler, would have been displeased with a series of ill disciplined acts which effectively evaporated any legitimate opportunity of victory. Most notably, was a 100m penalty in the third quarter which put them well and truly out to pasture.

The Hawks would have been delighted with the work of ruckman Tyler Keitel, who was clearly best afield. In terms of quality orchestrated performances, he would have only given Mozart a run for his money. Dylan Harwood and Matt Monastra also rose to the occasion, providing solid football nous across the half forward line.

Ballajura’s notable performers included Jake Lewis, Keenan Hooper and Mitch Miles. All were influential in proceedings; however, ultimately they lacked support throughout the match.

Noranda will be at home against a rampaging Morley in the East Perth District 15’s Grand Final at Lightning Park on Sunday.

ROOS ARE GRAND FINAL BOUND

The Mt Lawley-Inglewood Roos clawed their way into the grand final of the East Perth / Perth District 16s competition with a nail-biting 6-point win over the Victoria Park Raiders at Hamer Park on Sunday.

In an incident-packed final quarter, Mt Lawley broke away to a two goal lead midway through the term after trailing for most of the match. The Raider’s task was made more difficult following a yellow-card infringement and an unfortunate collision resulting in one of their players being stretchered from the field. But they continued to toil away gallantly and got within a kick in the final minutes.

Teni Henderson provided the spark for Mt Lawley when moved into the centre. Charles Lill worked tirelessly across half-forward and Alex Ridley’s composure held the backline together during the tense finish. Linford Smith’s athleticism around the ground was another key factor in the Roos win, with Jarrad Klemm, Tom Rees and Curtis Chester also amongst the best for Mt Lawley on the day.

Mt Lawley will now meet Thornlie in Sunday’s 16’s cross-district grand final at Lightning Park. The Roos took the honours in their only other clash this season in round 10.

Hawks Swoop on the 13’s Flag

Noranda attained a memorable premiership victory by outlasting a gallant Mt Hawthorn outfit by 29 points on Sunday September 18^th at Lightning Park, Noranda.

Key advantages in the Hawks win were height and speed. Noranda midfielders shared the load and shone in the 8.6 (54) to 3.7 (25) victory, which was played in atrocious conditions.

The Cardies adopted a ‘handball happy’ approach in the first half, with poor disposal costing them dearly. Noranda only lead by 11 points at half time, but it felt greater. The Cardies struggled moving the ball forward and it became clear the poor conditions didn’t suit them.

Noranda midfielder Louis Ray had the ball on a string. He thrived in the heavy conditions, with his contested possession battles a real standout. Ray was joined by Harry Blanch, whose hit outs resulted in countless Noranda clearances out of the middle.

No Cardies side ever rolls over and accepts defeat and this was exemplified by Sam Powell- Pepper. His memorable ‘McGuane-esque’ goal early in the last quarter had the crowd in awe; alas, it wasn’t enough.

Noranda will be satisfied with the 2011 season and they were worthy winners on Grand Final day. Hawks coach Shaun Blanch has led this side terrifically and the brand of football executed was of the highest order.

The Cardies should be encouraged by the 2011 season and have a solid raft of emerging talent. No doubt they will also be a force to be reckoned with in 2012.

Cardies Score a Grand Old Flag in 14’s

Mt Hawthorn crunched Ballajura Black by 23 points in the East Perth District 14’s Grand Final at Lightning Park, Noranda.

The Cardies were harder, quicker and more potent with the football. These qualities allowed for the 7.9 (51) to 3.10 (28) victory, with Ballajura Black never really threatening to break the game open.

At quarter time, the match was effectively over. The Cardies had built a 27 point lead, despite the driving rain. The Royals were second to the ball regularly, which appeared to infuriate the forwards.

Cardies midfielder Nicolas Mcrostie was judged best afield; his energy and presence in the midfield was invaluable. He was ably joined by Christopher Barac and Cal Radecki.

Despite the loss, Royals duo Justin Strawbridge and Darnelle Morrison were terrific and never gave up. Strawbridge’s third quarter was inspirational; a performance which should not be underestimated by anyone.

Cardies coach Simon Angelcoff has instilled a positive game style, with solid camaraderie. They endured an arduous finals campaign, but are worthy grand final winners.

Ballajura Black was left shattered, with their goal unfulfilled. This loss will burn in the memory, but with a solid season and hunger to improve, there is no reason why they cannot reverse the result in 2012.

Bulldogs Show Bite in 15’s Win

Morley continued their dominance in the East Perth District 15’s Grand Final, with a special 36 point victory against a dogged Noranda at Lightning Park, Noranda.

The Dogs, under the tutelage of Warren Marshall, have remained undefeated since 2009 and prevailed with an 8.10 (58) to 2.10 (22) victory, truly a phenomenal achievement.

Noranda appeared in awe of their opponents early, which concerned many onlookers. A lack of physical pressure allowed Morley to establish a 25 point buffer at quarter time and they remained in front all day.

The Hawks slowly, inch by inch, attempted to claw their way back into the contest. They appeared to regain belief and composure. The dominance was not reflected on the scoreboard, despite holding the Dogs goalless in the second quarter.

Shayne Hille was at his brilliant best, but he had plenty of his mates joining him; Calvin Borowski, Fletcher Cooke and Lance Mongoo were all excellent and left many of their Noranda opponents star-struck.

Noranda were well served by Benjamin Chopping, Damien Barbaro and Tyler Keitel. Despite the match being decided well before full time, the attitude and effort exhibited by these men never wavered one iota.

Morley will now play in the ‘Cross-District Super Cup’, against the Perth District 15’s Premiership winners, at Brownes Stadium on Friday, September 23^rd.

16’s Premiership Hops into the Roos’ Pouch

Mt Lawley dismantled Thornlie by 88 points in the East Perth District 16’s Grand Final at Lightning Park, Noranda.

The Roos showed no mercy in any department and capitalised on their opponents’ poor disposal. For Thornlie, the intermittent hail was just as hard as the 16.5 (101) to 1.7 (13) loss.

The game was played predominantly in Mt Lawley’s forward line, with the Thornlie defence under constant bombardment. Roos midfielders Alex Vernon and Teni Henderson ran rings around their opponents, collecting possessions at will.

Mt Lawley forward Jasper Munday capped off a terrific 2011 season, in being recognised as best afield. His forward presence was exceptional, despite the blustery conditions.

The lack of emotion and fight from Thornlie would have been startling to coach Cosi Dagostino and his staff. They had few contributors and would have been nonplussed by their performance.

Mt Lawley coach Simon Lill was jubilant post match, tremendously proud of his men. The majority of his team appear to have a bright future within the East Perth Colts program, a proof that matchwinners who work hard can reap the benefits of success.

Ballajura lose hard-fought 17’s Final

Ballajura fought hard before going down to a polished South Perth in the East Perth-Perth Cross-Districts 17’s Grand Final, played at Browne’s Stadium on Sunday September 18^th.

In poor and flukey weather conditions, with gale-force winds going straight across the ground, both teams found it hard to get into stride, but it was South Perth who settled best and eventually ran out 6-7-43 to 3-11-29 winners.

Both teams went score for score in the first half and scores were tied at half-time; however, South Perth completely dominated the third quarter – the “premiership quarter” – and held a commanding lead at the break. The Royals had been well served to this point by midfielders Brendan Fisher and Matthew Richards, whilst forwards Matthew Dixon and Josh Soutar were dangerous.

Not even an impassioned speech by captain Ben Hockaday at three-quarter time could get the Royals across the line and, even though they won the last quarter, and had one more scoring shot than their opponents, they could not make up the shortfall and ended fourteen points in arrears.

For the victors, midfielder Dylan Cox was outstanding and took control of the game when it mattered most. For the Royals, Brendan Fisher was the stand-out across the whole game.

Top Performers Honoured at District Awards Night

The cream of football talent, both on and off the field, was acknowledged at the East Perth District presentations held last night. The awards night recognised the outstanding achievements by all sectors of the football community within the East Perth district during the 2011 season.

Thirteen of the District’s volunteers were honoured for their services to football and in being nominated for District Volunteer of the Year. Earlier in the month, Errol Couch from Coolbinia Bombers JFC was named East Perth District Volunteer of the Year. He attended the Sandover Medal count on Monday night where all district finalists received special mention.

Seven of the District’s leading coaches were acknowledged for their outstanding efforts during the year. Among them was Wayne French from the Coolbinia Bombers JFC, who was recently named the State Auskick coach of the year for 2011. Wayne’s award includes an all-expenses paid trip to the 2011 AFL Grand Final where he is in the running for the National award.

Special mention was given to the Mt Lawley Hawks Women’s team, the first female team from the District. The Hawks made it through to the grand final of the WAWFL 2^nd Division, which was a great result in their inaugural season.

The Ellenbrook and Mt Hawthorn Cardinals Junior Football Clubs were named modified and youth clubs of the year respectively. These awards recognise performances by clubs both on and off the field. For the first time, E-points and S-points were taken into consideration in determining the winners of the Champion Club awards.

The event was a celebration of achievements from across the District during the 2011 season. Special mention was also given to award winners from the senior community clubs, EP District umpires and school ambassadors.

The night culminated in the announcement of the fairest and best winners from each of the 4 youth age groups within the District (see separate article).

The East Perth District Football Development Council will accept nominations for Life Membership prior to the upcoming Annual General Meeting.

Please find below an excerpt from the East Perth DFDC Constitution that outlines the process for Life Memberships:

The DFDC may appoint Life Members at the Annual General Meeting.

6.3.1 Life membership of the Council may be granted to persons who have made an outstanding contribution to the Council or to football in the District over a long period of time.

SPECIAL NOTE 1

As Life Membership is the highest honour that the Council can bestow on its members, it is important that, in assessing nominations received, the following points are considered before recommendations are submitted to an Annual General Meeting for confirmation.

The length of service given to the Council and to football.
The value of the service given to the Council and to football.
The manner in which the service given has benefited and furthered the objects of the Council.

SPECIAL NOTE 2

Life Membership of, or service to, organisations such as the Regional Development Council and the Junior Football Association which previously operated in the District shall be recognised by the Council.

6.3.2 All nominations for Life Membership shall be endorsed by two members as listed in 6.1 and 6.2 above and shall be lodged with the Secretary at least fourteen days prior to the Annual General Meeting.

6.3.3 An Awards Committee may be established and charged with the responsibility of reviewing all nominations received and forwarding their recommendations for acceptance or otherwise to the Executive prior to the Annual General Meeting.

6.3.4 A person shall be appointed a Life Member if he/she receives the support of seventy five per cent of the members at the Annual General Meeting.

6.3.5 A Life Member shall be entitled to all of the privileges of membership of the DFDC and shall not be required to pay any membership fees or subscriptions, but shall have no voting rights.

All nominations for Life Membership of the East Perth District Football Development Council must be received by the Junior Competition Administrator by no later than 5pm on Tuesday 1^st November.

The AFL National Coaching Conference attracts around 500 coaches from across Australia. The 2012 conference program is aimed at giving Australian Football coaches an opportunity to access the most up-to-date coaching methods and practices.

Sydney will host the 2012 AFL National Coaching Conference from Friday 17th February to Sunday 19th February.

Please note the change of date. In the initial announcement of conference dates it was placed at the traditional time of the conference following Australia Day. In subsequent discussions with AFL NSW/ACT, and potential venues, it was decided that the conference would be better placed to coincide with the first round of the NAB Cup in association with the GWS Giants/Western Bulldogs/Collingwood round robin at Blacktown International Sports Park on Saturday 18 February. There are a number of benefits to this and elements of the conference on Saturday will be built around the event. We apologise for any inconvenience the changes have caused and are aware of the possibility that some coaches may have pre-booked flights to Sydney based on the original dates. If that is the case please call Andrew Hughes on 03 9643 1953 to discuss the situation.

ALL GIRLS AUSKICK

The East Perth Football District has finalised a complete pathway for females in football this year, by offering 3 all-girls Auskick centres placed strategically throughout the District.

Auskick is the structured modified football program offered at local junior clubs for boys and girls in PP-Year 3.

A small number of girls enrol in the co-ed centres each year, but we know there are a lot more girls out there who would be willing to play if they were offered the comfort of an all-girls set-up. This appears to be borne out by the 6-week competition we are currently running for Years 5-7 Primary School girls on a Sunday morning, at Morley. It is proving very popular, with up to 35 girls being involved weekly in this all-girls program.

This year, all-girls Auskick centres will be offered at Coolbinia, Morley and Beechboro clubs. The Coolbinia club has been running successfully for a number of years now and we wish to emulate this at the Morley and Beechboro clubs.

Hatch Wins First Lunchtime on Langley

The first series of the Royals District AFL 9s competition, Lunchtime on Langley, was completed yesterday. The team from Hatch Engineering mastered the blustery conditions on the CBD foreshore to win the grand final by 7 points over the Housing Heroes (State Housing Dept).

A special award was also given to Woody's Warriors for their fantastic spirit shown during the competition.

Visiting Teachers Get The Royal Treatment

7 teachers from Seoul, South Korea, are currently visiting Perth as part of a teacher enrichment program.

They are being hosted by Glen Cookson, Principal of Weld Square Primary School, Morley, which is one of East Perth District’s schools. The group were guests of the WA Football Commission at last weekend’s Fremantle V Adelaide AFL game. They had not seen AFL football before and were amazed at the speed and physicality of the game.

On the day before the game, the group was given a run-down on the skills of the game by Brendan McFaull, East Perth District Development Officer, so they were well aware of how difficult the skills of kicking and marking are. To complete their crash course in football, the group will be guests of the EPFC at their home game against Claremont on 10th June.

Royals District Family Fun Day

This year's Family Fun Day will be held on Saturday 30th June at the WAFL Round 15 East Perth v Subiaco match at Medibank Stadium. There will be heaps of fun activities for kids, including a bouncy castle, farm animals, face painting and a free sausage sizzle.

There will also be $1,000, courtesy of Allianz, up for grabs for our junior football clubs during the half-time break as players compete in a number of competitions on the ground, including long kick, relay and goal kicking.

And of course there's the opportunity to watch some live WAFL action as the rampaging Royals will be in action against our co-tenants at Medibank Stadium, the Subiaco Lions.

AFL 9s Mixed Comp : Hatch Go Back-To-Back

Hatch Wins 2nd Season of AFL 9s

The finals of the 2nd season of the Royals District mixed AFL 9s competition were played on Tuesday at Langley Park with the Hatch Hurricanes taking out the title for the second consecutive time. Hatch defeated Inner City Dogs by 20 points in a spirited final. In the battle for the minor placings, Woody's Warriors defeated Hay Presto! by 5 points and the Angry Birds defeated Synergy by 26 points. Woody's Warriors won the award for Most Entertaining team.

The Royals District is searching for a new AFL 9s venue as Langley Park is unavailable for the remainder of the year. Discussions are already underway with the City of Perth to negotiate a new venue.

Trinity Too Good For Country Rivals

Trinity College has advanced to the quarter final stage of the year 8/9 schools competition by defeating McKillop Catholic College and Manjimup SHS in Australind on Tuesday. In wet and blustery conditions, the boys from Trinity thrashed the lower south west champions, Manjimup SHS, and then followed up with a harder-fought victory over McKillop CC. The scores from all three matches were:

Coaches Encouraged to Complete Concussions Survey

Coaches and trainers at community Australian Football clubs, who are over 18 years of age, are invited to complete an online survey as part of research into the management of concussions in football.

Concussion in football has been a topic of considerable discussion in recent times. The AFL has developed a best practice management system for concussion in which player welfare is the most critical element

The Sports Injury team at the Monash Injury Research Institute is conducting a research project seeking to understand the awareness, understanding and management of concussion in community sport.

Junior Finals Preview

Finals fever is in the air with our juniors set to take the field on Sunday for the qualifying and elimination finals.

For the winner of the qualifying final, the prize is a double chance at a premiership while the consolation prize is entry into next week's first semi final. In the elimination finals, the prize is a first semi finals berth and curtains for the losing team. So let's take a closer look at the games...

In the Year 8 competition, Noranda Gold has been the dominant team all season and will enjoy a week off after finishing on top of the ladder. The two year 8 finals will be very interesting. In the qualifying final, Mt Hawthorn Cardinals will play Morley Bulldogs. In their only encounter this season, the Bulldogs prevailed by 14 points in round 7. We can expect another close contest on Sunday. In the elimination final, Mt Lawley take on Noranda Brown in a replay of their round 16 clash last Sunday, where Noranda had a comfortable 55 point victory. They should go into Sunday's game full of confidence. Earlier in the year, the Roos turned the tables with a 34 point win over the Hawks in round 5, so this game is anyone's.

In the Year 9 competition, Ellenbrook White finished on top and have the week off. The qualifying final between Ellenbrook Purple and Mt Lawley promises to be a tight game if their round 10 match is anything to go by. Mt Lawley won this game by the smallest of margins after Ellenbrook had a comfortable 38 point win in round 3. The elimination final between Mt Hawthorn and Ballajura Black is another game where the two teams have shared the honours during the season. In round 4, it was the Cardies by 2 points but in round 11, Ballajura Black got home in another close game by 14 points.

In Year 10, the first of our cross-districts competitions, Ballajura Black finished the season as minor premiers. The qualifying final between Mt Hawthorn and Coolbinia is shaping up as a blockbuster. The only other encounter between the two teams earlier this year saw the Cardies prevail by 5 points. The Bombers will be bouyed by playing at home on Sunday but will it be enough? In the eleimination final, Noranda will go in as favourites after defeating Mt Lawley by 35 points in round 5. However, much has happended since then and the Roos will be keen to put up a stern showing in this do-or-die clash.

There is one game in the year 10 competition on Sunday which is the qualifying final between the star-studded Morley Bulldogs team and Ballajura Blue. The Bulldogs started their 2012 campaign with a resounding win over Ballajura Blue in round 1 but the Royals turned the tables with a surprise 2 point upset in round 12. They will need to be at their best again to upstage the Bulldogs on Sunday.

WAAFL Finals: Hawks Hoping to Capitalise

The Noranda ECU Hawks will be hoping to cash in on an outstanding WAAFL home and away season for the club which saw all three of its teams finish with the minor premiership.

The club’s C4 league team, C4 reserves and E3 grade teams will all play in second semi-finals this Saturday. The Hawks will be hoping to ease the heartbreak of 2011, when they lost both the C4 reserves and E3 grand finals, with at least one premiership in 2012.

The Ellenbrook Eels will also have two teams playing in second semi-finals this Saturday after their C3 reserves finished the season on top of the ladder and their C3 league finished in 2^nd spot. The Eels tasted premiership success for the first time in the club’s brief history last year and they are hungry for more of the same in 2012. Ellenbrook’s colts team also had another successful season finishing in 5^th position, but bowed out in the Elimination Final last Saturday to North Fremantle.

Ballajura will play in the 2^nd semi final of the West Coast Colts competition after finishing the season with the minor premiership. Their opponents will be Carlisle who they have beaten in both of their previous encounters this season.

After playing in last year’s A grade grand final, Mt Lawley just missed out on finals action this year, finishing in 6^th spot. However three of the club’s six WAAFL teams are still in the hunt. The Hawks’ A reserves and Phil Scott Colts teams will play elimination finals this Saturday, both against Collegians. Mt Lawley’s D1 reserves, who finished 2^nd, will play University in the 2^nd semi-final.

Dianella-Morley’s C3 reserves and Coolbinia-West Perth’s E3 teams will be hoping to keep their seasons alive as they play in 1^st semi-finals this Saturday.

Youth Leadership Program

The West Australian Football Commission has partnered with One Life to create a Youth Leadership Program for motivated young people in football.

The Youth Leadership Program will give the selected group a once in a lifetime opportunity to work with leaders, from both within and outside the football world, to develop a wide range of leadership skills. The Youth Leadership Program graduates will walk away with the knowledge and skills in leadership to have an impact on their peers and their community.

THE WAFC 1LIFE YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM WILL PROVIDE THE LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN FOOTBALL TO BE THE DIFFERENCE

You can nominate under three categories;

1. Community: A player at a junior community club

2. School: A participant in a WAFC endorsed school program

3. Umpire: A currently accredited umpire

The Royals District will then select a representative from each of the above categories to participate in the Youth Leadership Program.

Junior Preliminary Finals Preview

The East Perth Junior Competition finals action continues this Sunday with the Preliminary finals being played at Kingfisher Reserve in Ballajura.

The year 8s will get the day underway at 9.15am, where the Morley Bulldogs will play Noranda Brown. Noranda will go into the game with momentum after their upset win over Mt Hawthorn in last weekend's first semi-final. But they will need to play at their best if they are to continue in winning form against a very strong Morley Bulldogs outfit. In their only previous meeting this season, the Bulldogs had a comfortable 24 point victory.

The year 9s will see Ellenbrook Purple up against Mt Lawley in a replay of the qualifying final. In that game, Ellenbrook had an easy 41 point win to progress to the 2nd semi. The Roos have defeated Ellenbrook Purple this season, albeit by a point back in round 10, and they will be hoping for another close contest on Sunday.

In the year 10 competition, Ballajura Black will meet Mt Hawthorn. The Royals were ambushed last Sunday by the Bombers but will be better prepared against the Cardies on Sunday in this do-or-die contest. In their only meeting this season, Ballajura prevailed by 26 points. The Cardies will be hoping to take their strong finals form into this match after a solid win against the more highly fancied Mt Lawley last weekend.

The Year 11 preliminary final will see Queens Park go up against Ballajura Blue in what might be the match of the day. The two teams have shared the honours so far this season with Ballajura winning their round 4 clash by 18 points and Queens Park turning the tables with a 26 point win in round 15. Queens Park will be hoping to recover quickly from their loss in the 2nd semi-final last week against Morley, where they were reduced to 17 fit players. Ballajura endured a sometimes spiteful 1st semi final encounter against Thornlie and will be keen to get past Queens Park on Sunday for another crack at the Morley Bulldogs in the grand final.

Junior Preliminary Finals Review

Junior clubs in the East Perth District experienced a day of mixed fortunes as some teams said goodbye to the 2012 season while others celebrated a grand final berth.

The year 11 preliminary final between Queens Park and Ballajura Blue produced the match of the day. The bulldogs shrugged off last week’s heavy loss to Morley to snatch a two point victory in a high class game of junior football. Queens Park was well served by their band of small midfielders, led by Eugene Hart, Cheyenne Little and Waylan Woods. Vincent Keynes in defence was also outstanding and repelled many of Ballajura’s forward thrusts. For Ballajura, Matthew Glew was impressive and had good support from Keenan Hooper, Corey McEwen and Mitchell Miles, with Jake Lewis in the forward line able to capitalise on any opportunities that came his way.

The Year 8 preliminary final provided another heart-stopper. Noranda Brown, hoping for a Noranda derby in the grand final, went into their game with Morley as underdogs but showed plenty of spirit to go down by just 8 points. Excitement-machine, Eric Bashemule, was outstanding for the Bulldogs and kicked the sealer with just seconds remaining in the game. Jarrod Woods and Isaac McKean were also solid contributors for Morley, while the Hawks were well serviced by the two Jordans; Alvaro and Salerno with Liam Pittaway handy up forward.

The Year 9 match provided the only real upset of the day, as Mt Lawley stormed out of the blocks with a 7-goal opening term to rattle Ellenbrook Purple. With first use of the breeze, the Roos were unstoppable in the opening term, led by pacy midfielder Jake Balestra and ruckman Rory Kendall. Jai Renfree on the wing appeared to have brought his own football to the game while up forward, Isaaih Caton provided a handy target. For Ellenbrook, Michael Hedlam looked dangerous in the forward line but was hampered by an ankle injury early in the game. Nijal Eades and Shaun Nugent also worked tirelessly all day but were lacking support.

In the year 10 match, Ballajura Black had a comfortable 20 point victory over Mt Hawthorn. Dylan McKeich was outstanding for Ballajura and was well supported by Justin Strawbridge and Travis Keys, while for the Cardies, Jackson Principe and Cal Radecki worked tirelessly for their team.

Raiders Take Out Barry Cable Cup

The Victoria Park Raiders have won the 2012 Barry Cable Cup defeating Coolbinia Bombers by 15 points at Medibank Stadium on Friday night.

The Barry Cable Cup is played between the premiership winning year 10 teams from the East Perth and Perth Districts. It is named in honour of Barry Cable who played with East Perth, Perth and North Melbourne in over 400 league matches during the 1960's and '70's.

The legendary rover, who was present at the game, would have been impressed with the talent on display as Victoria Park gained the early ascendancy in the match and were able to hold on for a 15 point win despite a gallant effort from the Bombers. The final scores were Victoria Park 10.14 (74) b Coolbinia 8.11 (59). Coolbinia livewire, Abraham Kennedy, was judged best on ground.

Junior Grand Finals: Triple Treat for Bulldogs

Some of the brightest football prospects in the East Perth District were on display at Medibank Stadium on Sunday 9^th September.

In warm, sunny conditions players in the Year 8 to Year 11 age groups battled it out for premiership glory in the East Perth District Junior Football Competition Grand Finals.

Year 11

The Morley Bulldogs Year 11’s won their third consecutive premiership in emphatic style by thrashing their cross-district counterparts from Queens Park by 83 points; 15.17 (107) to 3.6 (24). Shayne Hille capped off an outstanding year, which included state selection and an East Perth colts debut, by being judged best on ground in the grand final.

Year 10

In the year 10 grand final, Coolbinia defeated Ballajura Black by 45 points, thanks to a scintillating best-on-ground performance by Abraham Kennedy. The Bombers earned the right to play in the Barry Cable Cup against Victoria Park who were the premiership year 10 team from the Perth District. The Barry Cable Cup will be played under lights at Medibank Stadium on Friday 14^th September.

Year 9

Ellenbrook White took out the year 9 premiership, defeating Mt Lawley by 58 points, but the game was closer than the final margin indicated. The roos took it up to their more fancied rivals for most of the first half before Ellenbrook clicked into another gear and stormed away with the match after the long change, thanks to blistering displays of football from best-on-ground, Kobe Chrisp and Tarir Bayok.

Year 8

In the year 8 grand final between Morley Bulldogs and Noranda Gold, scores were deadlocked at 3 goals apiece at quarter time. After the break, the Bulldogs failed to trouble the scorers for the remainder of the match as Noranda Gold ran out comfortable winners by an even 10 goals. Mason Nicolaou was best on ground for the Hawks in a great team effort.

Noranda Named Best WAAFL Club

The Noranda ECU Hawks have won the Champion Club award at the annual WAAFL presentation dinner held on Monday night.

The Champion Club award is presented to the fairest and most successful WAAFL club during the season. Noranda had an outstanding year with all three of the club's teams finishing the season as minor premiers. The award also takes into consideration the number of red and yellow cards issued to players who represent the club and the attendance by club delegates at offical WAAFL meetings during the year. There are over 60 clubs in the WAAFL and to be recognised as the best club is an outstanding achievement. Congratulations to President Michael Sheridan, Vice President Paul Lohmann and the rest of the Noranda ECU committee, coaches and players.

The fairest and best winners in the WAAFL were also announced during the evening and the winners from clubs in the Royals District were; Wayne Young (Mt Lawley) who took out the fairest and best award in the D1 Reserves and Ben Cooper (Noranda ECU) who won the E3 fairest and best award.

Hawks Flying After Dual Flags

Noranda ECU are celebrating premierships by their C4 and E3 grade teams in the WAAFL competition.

The Hawks, who finished minor premiers in all three of their grades, won the C4 grade grand final by 30 points and the E3 grand final by 24 points. The two premierships cap off what has been a very successful season for the boys from Lightning Park after they also won the WAAFL Champion Club award earlier this month.

Celebrations are also taking place at Ellenbrook and Ballajura. The Eels added more silverware to their trophy cabinet by winning a nailbiting C3 grade grand final by 1 point and Ballajura won the West Coast Eagles Colts premiership after defeating Carlisle by 15 points.

Mt Lawley also had two teams in WAAFL grand finals but unfortunately lost both. The Phil Scott Colts went down by 18 points to Trinity Aquinas and the D1 Reserves lost their grand final by 6 points to University.

The Mount Hawthorn Cardinals and Ballajura Royals Junior Football Clubs are the latest clubs in the Royals District to achieve bronze level status in the AFL Quality Club Program.

The two clubs were presented with their bronze level recognition by WAFC Director of Game Development, Warren Nel, at the annual Royals District Awards Night last month. The Royals District now has 7 bronze level clubs in the AFL Quality Club Program.

Girls Take Centre Stage at Morley

RA Cook Reserve in Morley was invaded by 300 female footballers last week, for the annual East Perth District Girls Football Carnivals.

Both Primary School age (Years 5-7) and Secondary School age (Years 8-10) girls represented their schools in the battle for the “Freo Dockers Cup”.

The Primary School carnival was held on Wednesday 7th and 12 teams represented Bayswater, Mt.Lawley, West Morley, Camboon, Morley and Ellen Stirling Primary Schools. The footy was played in a great spirit and the girls had a ball! After a tight struggle, the Bayswater PS team came away with the chocolates.... and the Dockers Cup. Congratulations!

The big girls came out to play in the Secondary School carnival on Thursday 8^th. 16 teams, from Ellenbrook Christian, Mt.Lawley, Aranmore, St.Andrew’s, Perth College and John Forrest, battled it out, with Aranmore coming away with the main prize. There were some phenomenal skills displayed on the day, with a number of the girls coming from elite levels in other sports, especially Netball (Aranmore) and Volleyball (Mt.Lawley).

Well done to all of the 300 girls who took part, showing that female footy is on the rise in the East Perth District.

East Perth District Annual Report 2012

The Annual Report of the East Perth DFDC was released at its 2012 AGM on 20th November. The report reveals that participation in football increased by 9.62% in the East Perth District during 2012.

The main segments responsible for this growth were Auskick (up 8%), Female Football (up 106%), AFL 9s (up 700%) and Secondary Schools (up 22%). The East Perth District ran three seasons of AFL 9s in the Perth CBD during the year, resulting in a 7-fold increase in numbers from 2011. The district also placed a priority on developing the female football pathway. This was achieved with the assistance of two AFL grants for the establishment of all-girls Auskick centres at Morley and Beechboro and the creation of a primary school girls 6-week competition which ran at Morley just prior to Easter.

On the downside, male youth participation at club level continues to be a concern for the District. A decrease of 16% was recorded for this section in the East Perth District during 2012. While there is no easy solution to this decline in youth numbers, which is occuring across all metropolitan districts in football and most other sports, the district will continue to implement measures to address this decline in the years to come.

Team nominations are now open for the AFL 9s Twilight Competition at Coolbinia Reserve.

AFL 9s is the AFL's official alternative version of the game. It is easy to play, not too physically demanding and provides an environment whereby participation, enjoyment and safety are a priority.

Nominations are open for teams in a mixed competition and a male-only competition. Games will be played on Monday evenings from 6pm with the 8 week season starting on 25th February.

The Royals District will be entering teams into a junior girls football competition in 2013.

The competition is open to girls between 9-12 years of age and will be played in a cross-district format between club teams from the Swans, Perth and East Perth Districts. Teams from the Coolbinia Bombers JFC (Bomberettes) and Morley Bulldogs JFC will participate from our district. Clubs will take turns to host games in a carnival type format on Sunday mornings during the coming winter.

Footy Continues to Lead Participation in WA

FOOTBALL participation in Western Australia is forecast to exceed 150,000 this year following a strong start to the West Australian Football Commission’s ‘Play AFL’ registration campaign at the weekend.

The expected growth in 2013 takes into account exciting re-registration levels for all segments to date.

This follows a 9.02% participation increase last season to a total of 141,835, making football by far the highest participation sport in Western Australia ahead of cricket, netball and soccer.

WAFC Director of Game Development Warren Nel said he was delighted with the positive start to the 2013 registration campaign and forecast growth this season.

“To exceed 150,000 participants is an exciting prospect for football in Western Australia,” Mr Nel said.

“There is a significant amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to ensure football is WA’s number one participation sport. I would like to personally thank all of the clubs, officials and volunteers that create the quality club environments that continue to attract people to all levels of our great game.”

Senior Clubs Looking for Colts Players in 2013

Senior clubs in the East Perth District are seeking players to fill their colts teams in 2013.

The District supports the establishment of colts teams at senior clubs because they help to retain young players in the game by providing them with a clear pathway from junior to senior football. This year, the WAAFL has increased the colts age to 20 to improve the viability of the competition.

In 2012, colts teams were based at Ballajura, Beechboro, Ellenbrook and Mt Lawley amateur football clubs. This year, Noranda and Coolbinia-West Perth are also seeking colts players. In addition, a Maali colts team, consisting of players selected from the annual Maali indigenous carnival held at Brownes Stadium, is looking to base itself at Light St reserve, home of the Dianella-Morley amateur football club.

Five Royals Nominated for Kick Start Program

Five young indigenous footballers from the East Perth District have been selected to participate in the Kick Start Cup program following their oustanding performances at the recent Nicky Winmar Carnival.

Jarrod Woods (Morley Bulldogs), Sam Powell-Pepper (Mt Hawthorn), Casey Phillips, Matt Boddington (Ellenbrook) and Kye Willcocks (Ellenbrook) will participate in the Kick Start Cup program. They are in the running to be selected to represent WA in the National Kick Start Cup Indigenous Carnival which will be held in Townsville from April 8th to 11th.

East Perth's team in the Nicky Winmar Cup had an outstanding carnival, narrowly losing the semi-final by 1 point to Perth. Jarrod Oakley-Nicholls was exceptional in his role as coach and mentor and he was very well assisted by Shaq McKenzie, Chris Worrell and Matt Gray (Ellenbrook JFC Vice President).

We will be running two separate clinics, the first for Auskick (5 to 8 year olds) on Tuesday 30th April and another clinic for 9 to 12 year olds on Wednesday 1st May.

The East Perth District will launch the 2013 football season in style on Wednesday 10th April.

1983 Brownlow Medallist and inaugural West Coast Eagles Captain, Ross Glendinning, will be a special guest speaker at the launch. New East Perth Football Club Chief Executive, Dean Turner, will also speak about the partnership between EPFC and the West Coast Eagles and its implications for the district.

Invitations to the launch will be sent to all district stakeholders, including junior and senior clubs, as well as female football representatives, umpires, multicultural groups and schools.

The annual junior competition bouncedown meeting will also be held on the night and will take place immediately before the launch.

Eagles Visit Local Primary Schools

Two primary schools in the Royals District received a visit from West Coast Eagles players during the week.

Matt Pridis, Nic Naitanui, Patrick McGinnity and Fraser McInnes dropped into Beechboro Primary School while Dean Cox, Will Schofield, Sam Butler and Adam Carter paid a visit to Maylands Peninsula Primary School.

The West Coast players joined in a demonstration game of Eagles Faction Footy as coaches and umpires before speaking to students from the schools about their own football journey and what life is like as an AFL footballer.

The two schools were chosen due to their involvement in school-based Auskick in 2012 and their support of school football activities in general.

Student Ambassadors Announced at West Morley PS

An exciting new initiative was unveiled on Thursday April 4, at West Morley Primary School.

Two students – Emily Solich, Year 6 and Ethan Glossop, Year 7 - were appointed to the roles of ‘AFL Student Ambassador’ at West Morley, a first in WA schools.

The scheme, devised by Peter Harty, AFL Royal Ambassador for the Morley cluster and 2012 AFL Coles School Ambassador of the Year, asks students who are interested and involved in local community football to become football leaders within the school. Emily and Ethan will help their teachers with the organisation of Design a Jumper, AFL Quiz, Footy Tipping, Eagles Cup and Eagles Faction Footy, to name just a few.

Both Emily (Junior Girls) and Ethan (Year 6 Mods) currently play with the Morley Bulldogs, so they are a very good source of information about the club and its activities.

East Perth Football District wishes Emily and Ethan all the best in their new and ground-breaking roles at West Morley.

The East Perth District will be running the "Royals Long Bomb" competition this season to find the longest kick in each of our youth age groups (years 8 to 12).

Competitions will be run in age groups at participating schools and clubs during training nights. The competition is open to any student in years 8 to 12 at schools in the East Perth District and any registered player in year 8 to 12 in an East Perth District junior club team.

Four Royals in WA Kick Start Cup Team

Four players from the East Perth District have been selected to represent WA in the Kick Start Cup U15 National Indigenous Football Championships.

Sam Powell-Pepper (Mt Hawthorn Cardinals), Matt Boddington (Ellenbrook Dockers), Kye Willcocks (Ellenbrook Dockers) and Casey Phillips (Noranda Hawks) have been chosen to represent WA at the carnival which starts on Monday 8th April in Townsville.

Powell-Pepper was East Perth's stand out player during the Nicky Winmar Cup and is an exciting tall midfielder with a bright football future. Boddington is a tall, strongly built key position player, while Willcocks and Phillips are both pacy midfielders/forwards.

This year's Kick Start Championships will feature teams from Pacific nations, including Papua New Guinea and New Zealand, as well as representative teams from all other Australian States and Territories.

Crocs Take on Droppies at Patersons Stadium

Twenty-two of our "more experienced" players from the East Perth District lived out a childhood dream when they stepped out to play on the hallowed turf of Patersons Stadium on Saturday.

The Central Crocs and The Droppies were chosen to play in an AFL 9s curtain raiser before the West Coast v Carlton game. The Crocs are one of two clubs in the district who participate in the AFL Masters competition for players 35 years of age and over. The club contains several familiar faces in and around the East Perth District, including one current club president, a club treasurer, our assistant competition director and several other notorious football tragics. The Crocs are based at Houghton Reserve in Bayswater and train on Thursday nights.

The Droppies team was formed by a group of guys who meet regularly on a Saturday morning at Coolbinia Reserve to have a kick and stay in shape. The team includes current and former Coolbinia Bombers JFC presidents Luke McNeice and Graham Begg.

While players from both teams would agree that their best playing days are well and truly behind them, all that was forgotten on Saturday as they wound back the clock to fulfil a life-long football fantasy.

New Sunday Modifieds Program at Coolbinia

The Coolbinia Bombers JFC have formed a Sunday Modified rules team, made up mostly of Year 4 & 5 players, to cater for a number of their players who are unable to play football on Saturdays.

The club identified a problem whereby many junior players after finishing Auskick (Sundays), were then not able to play football on Saturday mornings (Mods), due to other commitments or restrictions. Unfortunately, the majority of these players were then lost to football.

Coolbinia’s new Mods team plays on Sunday mornings. So, in effect, Coolbinia are running the normal Year 4s, 5s, 6s and 7s Modifieds teams on Saturdays and this combined Mods team on Sundays. East Perth District Development Officer, Brendan McFaull is full of praise for the program, "It is a fantastic innovation by the club, as a lateral answer to what was a problem for them, and the club administration is to be applauded for that." The East Perth Football District fully supports this initiative.

The program will allow other clubs who have a Year 4s team and are drawn to have the bye in any given week, the opportunity to have a game on that weekend if they desire. "Last Sunday, the Ballajura Year 4s, who had the bye, came to Coolbinia and had a game. It meant that the team having a bye didn’t miss out on a game, so a win-win for everyone."

The Coolbinia Bombers and the East Perth District are also working with nearby Carmel School to re-introduce AFL football programs. The school recently had a visit from West Coast Eagles utility Bradd Dalziell and the interest in football programs has increased so far this year.

Four Royals in State 18s Squad

The WA Football Commission has announced the final WA State 18s squad to take part in the NAB AFL National 18s Championships, with 4 representatives from East Perth, including two from the Royals District (metro).

Tyler Keitel (ex-Noranda JFC) and Tom Hodgson (ex-Ballajura JFC) have been chosen in the WA squad, along with Beau Chatley and Scott Jones from the club's country zone.

The State Academy will play trial games against rising stars and WAFL under 20s teams before final teams are selected to represent WA at each game of the 2013 NAB AFL National 18s Championships.

The WA State Talent Academy program is an elite football environment that focuses on individual player development and ability to contribute in a team environment. The main aims of the program are to:

Select the most talented developing players to progress into WAFL senior football and / or AFL football
A holistic approach to player development; physical, emotional, social & mental
Emphasise individual player development within a team context

The Royals and Demons Districts have joined forces to support the AFL's "Thanks Umps Round" on 4th & 5th May.

This purpose of this intiative is to acknowledge the crucial role umpires play in football and to encourage the support and greater respect for umpires. As part of this intiative, we are asking our junior clubs to acknowledge our umpires. Below are some examples of how they can do this:

All players and coaches to shake hands with the umpires after the coin toss;

Clubs to display "Umpiring is Everyone's Business" corflutes at their home grounds;

Promote AFL "Umpiring is Everyone's Business" TV commercial through websites and social media.

More Umpires Needed

Each weekend, around 62 field umpires are required to officiate in our junior football matches in the East Perth Junior competition. At the moment we are short of that number, which means we need to rely on parents and clubs to supply their own umpires for games. A similar situation exists in our senior ranks.

The East Perth District with support from our junior clubs has worked hard to improve game environments over the last 10 years. The E-point in youth and S-point in modified rules has contributed to that and we have adopted a zero-tolerance attitude towards any type of umpire abuse.

Live The Dream With Freo

Live the Dream is a once in a lifetime opportunity for 16 young Western Australians aged 16 or 17 to become immersed in the culture of the Fremantle Dockers Football Club and live the life of an AFL footballer for 5 days.

Live The Dream offers participants a rare opportunity to develop skills and behaviours which can deliver long-term benefits to the individual and their community. To be eligible for the Live The Dream program, participants must be 16 or 17 years of age as at 5th July 2013, must be available to live "in-house" from Friday 5th July to Wednesday 10th July, must be nominated by their junior football club, school or other organisation and must have parent/guardian approval.

The program activities include:

Appointment of a player mentor for each participant;
Leadership development training;
Physical and skills sessions;
Conditioning and injury prevention sessions;
Nutrition, media training and player welfare information sessions;
Game day involvement.

Applicants are required to complete the attached nomination form and return it to the club no later than Friday 17th May 2013 (the application closing date has been extended by 7 days).

The Royals District Family Fun Day is on again. This year it will be held on Saturday 29th June when East Perth play Peel Thunder at Medibank Stadium.

Entry for families of our junior footballers is free (see your junior club for your family pass) and there are plenty of activities to keep the kids occupied, including bouncy castle, face painting and temporary tattoos as well as a baby animal farm.

$1,000 will be up for grabs during the half time junior footy bonanza, courtesy of our major district sponsor Allainz. The competitions will include a long-bomb, team relay race and individual sprint.

School Football Comps Get Underway

The start of term 2 also marks the beginning of the WAFC School Football Competitions.

The Royals District will have a number of schools entered in interschool competitions, including the Year 11/12 AFL Sportsready Schoolboys and Schoolgirls Cup, the WAFC boys Year 8/9 competition and the Eagles Cup for years 5 & 6.

Thirty schools in the East Perth District will participate in the Eagles Cup interschool competition for year 5 and 6 students on Friday afternoons. More information about Eagles Cup can be found by clicking here.

Eight schools from the East Perth District will participate in the WAFC Boys Year 8/9 competition, including perennial finalists Trinity. The state final of this competition is often played as a curtain raiser to an AFL match later in the season, giving our players an extra incentive to participate. Click here for fixtures.

Mt Lawley Youth Girls Kick Off

Mt Lawley will play their first game in the inaugural Youth Girls football competition this Sunday against Peel Thunderbirds at East Fremantle Oval.

The Mt Lawley Hawks Youth team will be coached by current Mt Lawley senior player, Bronte Ryan, who is recovering from a long-term knee injury. It is hoped that the youth team will provide future players for the Mt Lawley seniors, which will ensure its long-term sustainability.

The Youth Girls competition includes teams from all 9 WAFC metropolitan Districts and games will be played as curtain-raisers to the senior matches. The competition takes the place of the one-day youth girls carnival that has been held in September during the past 4 seasons.

The youth girls competition and the new Junior Girls competition initiated by the Royals and Swans districts, now means that girls have a complete pathway to play female-only football from the age of 5 to adult.
