Schumacher Marks New Chapter at the Royals

Thursday, December 19, 2019 - 4:00 PM

Angus Schumacher believes his time on Carlton’s list will hold him in good stead for the next chapter of his life in Perth.

Schumacher is one of four key off-season signings for East Perth ahead of the 2020 season.

The 20-year-old, who was taken at pick 70 in the 2017 NAB AFL National Draft, spent two years at the Blues. He made his debut in Round 20 this season against the West Coast Eagles before his time ultimately ended with Carlton at the end of August.

“It was a good couple of years. It went really quick,” he said.

“I learned heaps about myself and about footy. It should hold me in good stead for the next chapter here.”

Schumacher trained with St Kilda in the lead-up to the Draft and kept in touch with East Perth Football Operations Manager Ward Harris.

“It’s been a bit of a whirlwind,” he said.

“Ward hit me up a while ago now. We kept in touch while I was sorting some things out.

“I trained with St Kilda for a bit so that put things on hold again, but once that all ended and the Draft went past, I made the decision that I was going to come over.

“Since then, it’s all happened super-fast but it’s been really good.”

The 192cm utility was primarily trialled off half back during his time at Carlton but is keen to use his size and pace through the midfield on the big WA grounds.

“Hopefully I can add a bit of inside grunt and a bit of run and carry,” he said.

“Whether it’s inside, outside or off half back as well. Hopefully I’ll work well with the other mids.”

Schumacher has identified consistency as a focus for his game in 2020.

“I’m focusing on consistency over the four quarters. To turn up every week and every quarter and get my job done regardless of what the situation is going to be.”

The playing group will break for the Christmas period and will return to the training track early in the new year.
