Not sure on the rules for AFL Auskick through to 12s football?
The rules for youngsters entering our great game of footy have been modified to ensure maximum participation and the opportunity for players to develop their skills.
In particular tackling is not introduced until the Auskick Suparulz agegoup (8s) and even then it is only a hold and release tackle. Full AFL rules are not introduced until players join the 13s agegroup. Parents are advised however that the East Perth District does run an open rules trial for the 12s in the last 5 weeks of the season.
As a parent or coach it is important to understand players develop their skills of the game at different rates. Whilst tackling, smothering and bumping are a highlite of the game at the elite level, development of the basic skills of the game are more important in the younger ages. The ability to kick, mark, hand pass and pick up the football is very difficult when under full pressure so modifying the rules assists the players in gaining confidence. As the players get older, the defensive and physical skills are slowly introduced.
